CHAPTER NINE

Peri woke up with a headache. Not an auspicious beginning to her day. She couldn’t stay in bed until it passed. She had a guest. Plus, if she waited too long, Jason would show up.

After showering and dressing, Peri opened her bedroom door to find Jason leaning against her grandmother’s bedroom door.

He straightened when he saw her. “It’s about time. This is boring.”

“Maybe you should try crossing over.” Peri strode past him, heading for the kitchen to begin breakfast preparations since Maralyn had the morning off.

“I don’t know how. Besides, I’m not ready. Someone murdered me, Peri. Me! You have to figure out who did it.”

“It would make things a lot easier if you could just remember who stabbed you.”

“Don’t you think I’ve tried?”

Peri supposed he had. “I’m not a detective, Jason. I don’t know what I can do.”

“Help that new boyfriend of yours. He’s a detective.”

“Theo is not my boyfriend. He’s already trying to figure out who killed you.”

“Great. That’s great. But you have to help because you’re the only one who knows I’m here.” Jason sounded desperate.

Peri guessed he was. She couldn’t imagine being in his position. It had to be terrifying.

“I’m not going anywhere, Jason. At least not unless someone besides my family and friends realizes I’m talking to a ghost. If that happens, they’ll probably have me committed, and we’ll both be in trouble.”

“I get that.”

“I mean, we’re going to have to be careful communicating when anyone else is around,” Peri added because she was pretty sure Jason didn’t get it.

She smelled something delicious even before she entered the kitchen. Now she was salivating.

Pauly stood at the stove frying bacon. He looked guilty when he spotted her come out of the hall. “I hope you don’t mind. I wanted to thank you for letting me stay here.”

Peri smiled. “I don’t mind at all. You’re welcome here. There’s no need to go to all this trouble, though. Usually, we have a cook, but she needed this morning off.”

He smiled. “This is no trouble. None at all. I love to cook, and I seldom got the chance while I was on the road with the band. I’ve been enjoying it since my retirement. Maybe your cook will let me help her once in a while.”

Peri didn’t know about that, but Maralyn got Sundays and Mondays off. He was welcome to do all the cooking he wanted then. Walking to the island, Peri took a seat. “We can certainly ask her. In the meantime, knock yourself out, Mr. Rhodes.”

“None of that Mr. Rhodes stuff. I thought we settled that. I’m just an old drummer. It’s just Pauly.”

Peri nodded. “Okay, Pauly. I’m Peri.”

“This looks delicious,” Jason commented, peeking through the oven door. “I wish I could taste it, but I can’t even smell it. Being dead sucks.”

“Only because you’re still hanging around here instead of crossing over,” Peri said. She froze when Pauly turned from the frying pan.

“What was that? I don’t hear as well as I used to,” Pauly said.
